Pretzel Rolls are the start of a great sandwich!

Ingredients

  • 1 package Simply Homemade® Pretzel Creations™
  • 3/4 cup very warm tap water
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter OR margarine
  • All-purpose flour

Directions

Combine yeast and very warm water (105˚ to 115˚F) in a large bowl.  TIP:  Yeast thrives in warm water, but not hot, so avoid the microwave and simply use tap water. Let mixture sit 3 to 5 minutes.

Add pretzel mix, pretzel salt, egg and butter to yeast mixture and stir until thoroughly combined.

Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface.  Fold the dough in half and press down.  (If the dough is sticky, use a little flour on your hands.)  Fold in half again and press down.  Repeat until you have folded and pressed the dough 10 times, total.

Divide dough into 6 equal pieces.  Roll each into a smooth ball.   Place on a well greased baking sheet.

Cover and let rise 25 minutes, until slightly puffy (dough will not double in size).

Preheat oven to 450˚F.

Combine 6 cups water with baking soda in a large deep saucepan until water boils (mixture will be foamy).  NOTE:  Baking soda can be corrosive to certain materials.  We do not recommend using saucepans that have hard anodized finishes.

Carefully transfer each roll onto a slotted spoon or spatula.  Allow roll to slide off spoon into boiling water (immersing completely), and boil each roll for 30 seconds, turning after 15 seconds.  Replace on baking sheet.  Continue with remaining rolls.

Slash the top of each roll about 1/4-inch deep using a sharp knife (serrated works best) to create an “X”.

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until deeply browned.  Immediately remove rolls from baking sheet with a spatula and place on wire rack to cool.

Slice and fill with your favorite sandwich filling!
